elder care

While there is no escaping the fact that dementia robs its sufferers of tremendously important and valuable faculties, there is solace in the fact that new retirement facilities have been created to help this special group of seniors manage, with dignity, the daily challenge that is dementia.

Well, first of all, there are usually community services to help elderly people with simple daily things that may be harder and harder for them to handle on their own. These services usually include things like housekeeping and home repair. Sometimes they include mail deliveries and things like that. They can also include telephone check-in calls and emergency response systems, including those pager alert systems and watches that you can press in case you have fallen and can’t get up.

Pride Mobility came to be in the late 1980’s, when consumers were sick of jimmy-rigged lift chairs that lacked safety and reliability. Breaking away from the norm, Pride decided to start from the ground up. By beginning with the design of the frame itself, Pride built liftchairs that were purpose built and could withstand the stress of being lifted multiple times on a daily basis. Not only that, but they did away with the spring based lift mechanism entirely. Instead, they replaced spring lifts with electronic lifts.

Another option is to create an apartment within your elderly parents house and rent it out! This sort of arrangement makes sure that there is always somebody around to keep an eye out or an ear out in case you’re aging parent has an emergency. One popular form of this arrangement is to rent out an apartment over the garage, or convert the basement into a standalone apartment. You may also set up an agreement that makes the tenant responsible for yard work and maintenance work around the house freeing up your aging parent from having to do these chores that they may not be able to perform anymore.

What you should be looking for is the following: 1. How is their appearance? Is their attire commensurate with the fees that you or a loved one will be paying. Remember, the administrator is the face of the community. Does their appearance tell you that they understand this fact? 2. How is their behavior? Are they nervous about being asked questions? Do they appear defensive? Or, do they demonstrate confidence and a sense of ease Do you sense that they understand your concerns and fears? Memory care residences are often organized chaos. The person at the helm must be in control of the ship.

How does the administrator interact with the residents? With staff? How do the staff react to the presence of the administrator? Does it appear that the administrator is somewhat of a stranger in the resident living/care areas? If so, this may mean that they have only a second-hand knowledge of the care aspect of resident services – undoubtedly the most crucial of all services. In a hierarchy of needs, personal care and hygiene are second only to food and shelter. If attention to this crucial aspect of care is lacking, then all else is moot.
