Mobility equipment is designed to help you go about your daily life where once it might have been difficult or even impossible. While mobility equipment cannot completely transform your life it can help make many actions much easier then they once were. Some common mobility equipment products include reclining chairs, self propelled wheel chairs, nursing beds, walkers, lift chairs, power wheel chairs and patient lifts.
Lift chairs are particularly useful for those that may be overweight, have arthritis and have back problems. They are specifically designed to make standing from a sitting position much as easier as this can be very difficult for some individuals. The lift chair will raise itself up to pre determine heights so you can easily stand up without putting too much strain on your body. They also will recline at the touch of a button. The controls are easy to use and found on a remote that is attached to the chair. In a recline and lift chair your back and legs will be properly supported.
Scooters are great mobility items as the allow you to remain independent and you can participate in many activities that you love. Scooters have the advantage over powered wheel chairs as they can be used both indoors and outdoors. They are very sturdy and comfortable and provide excellent balance and stability when riding. Scooters are available in many different models and you will be sure to find one that meets your specifications.
Powered wheel chairs can be very powerful and make moving about easy. The newer models all use captain’s chairs which provide more comfort and easier steering then the traditional models. Wheel chairs should only be used indoors and can have a very tight turning radius making them very manoeuvrable. The speed of the wheel chair models will vary and can reach speeds of around 20 to 25 mph.
Walkers are still used as the individual may need help walking but is still mobile enough that they don’t need to use a scooter or wheel chair. Walkers can easily be stowed for storage and travel as most are foldable and the majority comes with foldable seats and baskets for carrying items. The brakes are operated by the hands and can be locked into place when necessary.
A patient lift is typically used in hospitals and care facilities but may also be found in personal homes. This is used to help the patient raise themselves form a horizontal position and really can help with any movement of any kind. This is used for patients that have extremely limited mobility and do not have the strength to lift their torso or legs without help.
